Course Objectives

Paralegal practitioners are key players in the legal sector as they substantially support the commercial environment and perform a variety of tasks to provide legal assistance to the public.  A Higher Certificate in Paralegal Studies (Commercial Practice) will give you the opportunity to seek employment in a commercial environment that requires assistance in providing paralegal services.  Many opportunities will also arise for you in all branches of the public (government) sector. 

The programme will equip you with the skills to conduct legal research on behalf of legal or paralegal practitioners and provide administrative and organisational support in a legal or paralegal workplace.   You will also attain the social knowledge to communicate with, guide and refer clients in a paralegal context. 

Successful candidates will become an asset to the legal sector with the competencies and professional conduct to carry out a number of functions to address the legal needs of the public.

Gaining Entrance

To study this course, you will need to meet the following requirements:

  • The minimum entry requirement for this course is a National Senior Certificate or equivalent.

Length of Time

Minimum - One (1) year of study (part-time)

Maximum - Two (2) years of study (part-time)


Upon successful completion of this programme, you will receive a Higher Certificate in Paralegal Studies (Commercial Practice)

This is a higher education programme accredited by the Council on Higher Education (CHE) and registered with the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET).

  • Debt Collecting Process

Learning Material

Your study material will be supplied in a choice of formats (digital only or a combination of printed and digital format).  Prescribed textbooks are excluded and must be procured by the student.  Please see: (Terms and Conditions).

Guidelines for Assignments and Examinations

Lyceum is committed to guiding you through the submission of your assignments and ensuring that you are registered for your examinations. 

Please see the following information below, to ensure your process is smooth.

Assessments consist of:

  • One assignment (formative assessment) and
  • A final examination (summative assessment) for each subject.

All assignments for the year must be submitted in order to qualify for the exams.

Please ensure all your assignments are submitted on time.  If you have missed a deadline, you may re-submit at a small cost.

Your final mark for each subject will be calculated as follows:

  • Assignment contributes 20% towards the final mark
  • Examination contributes 80% towards the final mark

If your assignment mark is low:

If you submit an assignment for a specific subject and fail, you do not have to re-submit a further assignment prior to writing the “supplementary” examination.  The assignment mark will automatically be carried over.  However if the assignment mark is low, and you wish to re-do the assignment, you may apply to the examinations section for a copy of the new assignment (at the prescribed fee) and may then re-submit the assignment on or before the new due date.
