Course Objectives
The legal industry needs support every day in order to widen the scope of the services that it offers to the public. It is with this in mind that the purpose of paralegal services is to provide primary legal services that are easily accessible to the public. 

At the end of the day, an effective paralegal will be in a position to conduct legal research on behalf of a legal practitioner, offer guidance and refer clients in a paralegal context and provide the necessary admin and organisational support in the office space.  

With a qualification in paralegal studies you will be in a position to become the backbone of any legal organisation. Lyceums programme content will equip you with knowledge of debt collecting processes, criminal law procedure and introduce you to aspects of South African law which will all hold you in good stead.

Gaining Entrance 
To study this course, you will need to meet the following requirements:
You will need to meet the minimum entry requirement of a National Senior Certificate (NSC) OR equivalent. 

Length of Time
Minimum - One (1) year of study 
Maximum - Two (2) years of study 

Upon successful completion of this programme, you will receive a Higher Certificate in Paralegal Studies. 
This is a higher certificate programme accredited by the Council on Higher Education (CHE) and registered with the Department of Higher Education and Training. 

Contents of Course
The programme covers the following subjects:

  • Office Management for Legal Practices
  • Criminal Law and Law of Procedure 
  • Debit Collecting Process 
  • Civil Litigation Processes
  • Introduction to South African Law

  • Wills and Estate Management
  • Property Law and Conveyance Practice
  • Financial Accounting 1

Learning Material
Your study material will be supplied in a choice of formats (digital only or a combination of printed and digital format).  Prescribed textbooks are excluded and must be procured by the student.  Please see: (Terms and Conditions) 

Guidelines for Assignments and Examinations
Lyceum is committed to guiding you through the submission of your assignments and ensuring that you are registered for your examinations.  
Please see the following information below, to ensure your process is smooth.

Assessments consist of:

  • One assignment (formative assessment) and
  • A final examination (summative assessment) for each subject.

All assignments for the year must be submitted in order to qualify for the exams.
Please ensure all your assignments are submitted on time.  If you have missed a deadline, you may re-submit at a small cost.

Your final mark for each subject will be calculated as follows:

  • Assignment contributes 20% towards the final mark
  • Examination contributes 80% towards the final mark

If your assignment mark is low:
If you submit an assignment for a specific subject and fail, you do not have to re-submit a further assignment prior to writing the “supplementary” examination.  The assignment mark will automatically be carried over.  However if the assignment mark is low, and you wish to re-do the assignment, you may apply to the examinations section for a copy of the new assignment (at the prescribed fee) and may then re-submit the assignment on or before the new due date.
