SAQA ID: 67702, NQF: LEVEL 5 (CREDITS: 120)

Are you a law enforcement officer who wants to foster good relations with the media? Now you can with a Higher Certificate in Law Enforcement in Media Relations.

Course Objectives

The importance of good relations between law enforcement officers and the media cannot be overemphasized.  It is in the greater public interest that a strong and honest bond exists between the two, so that the information disseminated is fair, accurate and filled with integrity.  A clear need has been identified for the police to understand how the media works and to manage internal and external communication strategies accordingly.

Traditionally law enforcement officers and the media haven’t been known to get along very well.  A greater need for professional conduct with the media has been established and it is with this in mind, that this course by Lyceum has been designed.  Through the subject matter, areas such as police media relations, management principles and techniques and police liability issues are explored.

Please see the following information below, to ensure your process is smooth.

Assessments consist of:

  • One assignment (formative assessment) and
  • A final examination (summative assessment) for each subject.

All assignments for the year must be submitted in order to qualify for the exams.

Please ensure all your assignments are submitted on time. If you have missed a deadline, you may re-submit at a small cost.

Your final mark for each subject will be calculated as follows:

  • Assignment contributes 20% towards the final mark
  • Examination contributes 80% towards the final mark

If your assignment mark is low:

If you submit an assignment for a specific subject and fail, you do not have to re-submit a further assignment prior to writing the “supplementary” examination.  The assignment mark will automatically be carried over.  However if the assignment mark is low, and you wish to re-do the assignment, you may apply to the examinations section for a copy of the new assignment (at the prescribed fee) and may then re-submit the assignment on or before the new due date.
